Ten Members of Hearts Staff Lose Jobs as Administrators Begin Cuts

June 20, 2013

At least ten members of staff at Hearts have lost their jobs today as the club’s administrators began a series of cuts to try and save the Scottish Premier League (SPL) club.

The Edinburgh side have debts of around £25m and accountancy firm BDO has been placed in charge whilst they are in administration.

BDO’s Bryan Jackson seemed relaxed about the job cuts, telling BBC Radio Scotland they were ‘inevitable.’

Jackson also said: “We need to cut costs quickly. I think there will be losses on the footballing side, although that has already been pared down quite a bit.”

Brutal cuts

Trevor Birch who works alongside Jackson described the cuts as ‘brutal’ and said ‘it’s as bad a situation as I’ve ever come across.’

“It’s not helped by the timing, getting the appointment in June when there is no income,” he added.

“We are desperately looking at ways of bringing in some income. Unfortunately, probably the only real way of doing it is to make the usual plea to supporters.

“There is nowhere else to go really, apart from trying to sell players.”

Hearts employ 131 members of staff in total including 26 first-team footballers.

The majority of their debt is owed to Ukio Bankas and UBIG who were controlled by Hearts owner Vladimir Romanov.

However, Ukio Bankas are in administration and UBIG have seen their assets frozen.
