SPL Clubs Agree on League Overhaul
January 28, 2013
The Scottish football league structure could be overhauled after all 12 Scottish Premier League (SPL) clubs gave “unanimous backing” to the proposals, according to SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster.
The Scottish Football Association are pushing for a new league structure that would see 12 teams in the SPL, 12 teams in Division One and 18 teams in Division Two. After 22 games the top two divisions would divide into three groups of eight teams.
The SPL clubs discussed the issue at Hampden Park today, and the Scottish Football League (SFL) clubs will do so on Thursday.
The plans had been backed by SPL and SFL clubs last year, before some doubt emerged earlier this month. Some clubs who had not been involved in the original meetings required further information following fan scepticism.
Doncaster said: “The last time that all of our SPL clubs got together was on December 3 so in the intervening time there has been some more detail that’s been discussed with the PGB and with the SFL board. All of that was provided today and the clubs are clear and united and unanimous in their view that this should be taken forward to the next stage.”
