Roger Federer Calls For ATP And WTA Merger, Says It “Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago”
April 22, 2020
Tennis legend Roger Federer has sparked major calls for the ATP and WTA tennis tours to merge on Twitter this afternoon.
It has long been something that has been voiced however any chance of a possible merger has not appeared in the pipeline, however the Swiss superstar, debatably the greatest player of all-time has voiced his opinion that the sport needs it to happen in a number of tweets this afternoon.
Federer said: “These are tough times in every sport and we can come out of this with 2 weakened bodies or 1 stronger body. It probably should have happened a long time ago, but maybe now is really the time.”
In a response to a fan, he added: “I agree with you, It’s too confusing for the fans when there are different ranking systems, different logos, different websites, different tournament categories.
His original tweet has been backed up from a number of major figures in tennis, including Billie Jean King, Rafael Nadal and Simona Halep.
I agree, and have been saying so since the early 1970s. One voice, women and men together, has long been my vision for tennis.
The WTA on its own was always Plan B.
I’m glad we are on the same page.
Let’s make it happen. #OneVoice

Hey @rogerfederer as you know per our discussions I completely agree that it would be great to get out of this world crisis with the union of men’s and women’s tennis in one only organisation https://t.co/fTCfvMiU4G

The logistics of any possible would be huge and take a great deal of time to work out, however some of the sport’s most prominent voices throwing their support behind seems sure to have an impact in at least creating discussions.
