Premier League Clubs Breaks Record with £760m Spending in 2013/14

February 3, 2014

Premier League clubs spent £760m ($1.24bn) during the 2013/14 season, which amounted to a new record figure.

According to a report by Deloitte, clubs in England’s top flight spent around £130m ($212.3m) in January, which is above last year (£120m, $195.96m), but below the record January spend of £225m ($367.42m) in 2011.

Totaled with the spend in the 2013 Summer Transfer Window, Premier League clubs spent more in a season than ever before.

Dan Jones, Partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte said: “This January window has seen Premier League clubs spend a total of £130m. Despite this being short of the record, the 2013/14 season as a whole is a new record. Premier League clubs have spent a total of £760m, breaking the £700m ($1.14bn) barrier for the first time. This is significantly higher than the previous record of £670m ($1.1bn) in 2008/09.

“It is important to put this in context; the transfer spending is supported by the record level of revenues of Premier League clubs, driven primarily by new broadcast agreements. This gives Premier League clubs the ability to continue to invest significantly in their playing talent.

“Spending has again been driven by a minority of clubs, with just two accounting for more than 60% of the league’s total spending. Around half of Premier League clubs chose not to spend this month.”

Out of the £130m spent in January, £65m ($106.2m) (50%) was on players from abroad, £55m ($89.8m) (42%) was spent on fellow Premier League players and £10m ($16.3m) (8%) was spent on Football League players.

Around £35m ($57.17m) was spent on transfer fees on deadline day and Manchester United and Chelsea were the biggest gross spenders in the window, amounting to over 60% of the total Premier League spend.
