November 10, 2014
The MotoGP will return to Austria from 2016 after a deal was agreed to stage the race at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
The deal was struck between Dorna, the promoter of the motorcycling world championship and Red Bull co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz.
Austria last staged a MotoGP race in 1997 and will make a return after 17 years.
“Red Bull’s Dietrich Mateschitz and Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta have reached an agreement which will see MotoGP return to Austria as early as 2016, with the race to be staged at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg,” Dorna said.
“Pending all of the necessary official approvals for the Red Bull Ring, Dorna will propose the inclusion of the grand prix to the FIM to be scheduled in the 2016 season.”
