Mario Gotze Angers Adidas by Wearing Nike Shirt at Bayern Unveiling

July 3, 2013

Bayern Munich’s marquee summer signing Mario Gotze has upset the club’s kit maker adidas, by wearing a Nike t-shirt at his official unveiling.

Adidas are a long-standing sponsor of Bayern and hold a 9.1% stake in the Bavarian giants.

The sportswear giant’s CEO, Herbert Hainer is also a member of the board at the club and the move by Gotze has ‘negatively surprised’ adidas.

Adidas deemed the unveiling as an ‘official Bayern Munich function’ and therefore the presence of Gotze’s white Nike t-shirt should have been disallowed.

An adidas spokesman said: “The pictures from today’s press conference with Mario Gotze have negatively surprised us.

“Contractually it is not permissible because it is an official function of Adidas partner Bayern Munich. We have already discussed with Bayern Munich.”

To add insult to injury, the other player to be unveiled, Jan Kirchhoff, was also wearing a Nike t-shirt.

What do you think of the move by Gotze? Should he have known better or should the club have stepped in? Join the discussion here >>
