A high court in Johannesburg has ruled that Soccer City Stadium will revert back to being called the FNB Stadium. The stadium, which hosted this summer's Fifa World Cup final, will return to its old name after the court upheld FNB bank's naming rights. The bank said in a statement: "The bank is pleased with this outcome and will continue with its promotional and other programmes bearing the name FNB Stadium." The stadium was built in 1988 and owned by FNB, but as part of the 2010 World Cup, the bank gave up part of its ownership of the stadium and transferred it to the City of Johannesburg. In compliance with Fifa regulations, FNB agreed that the name of the stadium would be changed for a period starting three months before the World Cup and until a week after the final. |
