The Legal Affairs Director (LAD) will oversee all legal matters for the organization and serve as the primary legal advisor to the DG, the organization’s senior management team and the Legal Affairs Commission.

The LAD will be expected to provide alternative solutions to minimize liability exposure while achieving business goals.

Main responsibilities

  • Participating as a senior member of management. Working directly with the management team to understand strategic initiatives and business needs, providing legal counsel/services to a wide range of internal (IOC departments, entities owned by the IOC) as well as external stakeholders (NOC’s, IF’s and OCOG’s) on a limited basis.
  • Establishing and influencing appropriate legal considerations which must be taken into account when decisions are made.
  • Advising the company on the litigation risks of possible business decisions, providing preventive counselling with respect to the legal risks associated with business practices, and developing strategy in response to civil litigation and regulatory inquiries (including negotiating settlement agreements where appropriate), and cost-effectively managing the resources required to address those matters.
  • Negotiating, reviewing, drafting and implementing a wide variety of complex, multi-party agreements: Olympic Charter, Host City Contract, TOP Sponsorship agreements, etc.
  • Protecting and reinforcing the protection of Olympic related IP (- e.g. marks, moving images, photographs, music, performances) for the benefit of the IOC and other constituents of the Olympic Movement.
  • Supervising and coordinating the work of outside lawyers and consult with them on sensitive legal issues.
  • Identifying communication and training needs with the organization, developing and presenting training materials on relevant laws and legal business issues as required.
  • Developing, implementing and managing a strategic plan for the provision of legal services in accordance with and in support of business objectives; managing existing in-house lawyers; creating staff development plans in conjunction with HR; and recruiting, developing, and training staff in accordance with the strategic plan.

Profile and skills

University studies and higher education (MBA) or equivalent professional experience.

  • 15 years’ experience including significant professional experience as advising senior management of complex, international organisations.
  • Demonstrable legal analytical skills, general business acumen and expertise in several of the core areas of work listed above.
  • Contract review and management in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to understand complex legal concepts and analysis and translate those to non-lawyers to create practical processes, guidance and training.
  • Prior success building relationships and communicating with diverse groups of people.
  • Strong project management skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong teamwork and client service skills; experience exercising influence and managing change while having an open and inclusive tone; solution-oriented.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through challenging situations.
  • Administratively self-sufficient with demonstrated skill with Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Mother tongue English or French, with good command of the other language.
