YouTube have confirmed they have agreed a deal with India’s Bridgestone World Series Hockey (WSH) that will allow the inaugural edition of the tournament to be streamed live on the video-sharing website.
The deal will become live when the WSH season draws to its conclusion, where it is understood YouTube will live stream all games via Youtube.com/wsh, including the semi-finals and final, which are scheduled for April 1 and 2. Along with the live action, hockey fans will also be able to match highlights from the entire tournament on the video-sharing platform.
“We are delighted to have Bridgestone World Series Hockey as our global partner and to bring this action packed hockey content to the YouTube community around the world,” said Gautam Anand, head of content partnerships at Google Asia Pacific. “WSH has an exciting format coupled with high scoring non-stop game play, and we’re working closely with the team to generate awareness around the world for the sport.”
The inaugural WSH commenced on February 29 and aims to become the biggest hockey tournament in the world. A joint initiative between the Indian Hockey Federation and Asian media giant Nimbus Sport, WSH was conceived with the objective of reinvigorating the sport of hockey in India and making hockey the “sport of choice” for young Indians. With a total prize purse of approximately US$2 million, the World Series has been designed as an annual event with a multi city franchise-based model.
Yannick Colaco, chief operating officer of Nimbus Sport, added: “The historic inaugural edition of Bridgestone World Series Hockey already has many firsts to its credit and this partnership with YouTube has taken the league to all the global fans. The response on the online space is extremely overwhelming and we’re excited to take this fantastic tournament to hockey fans across the globe.”
